new class and updated training schedule
Hi everyone. You will see a couple of updated items in the Training section of the website. A new schedule of training classes has been published. There are both work day options and evening options for the Mill Fundamentals and Lathe. Over the course of the winter I was focused on some different projects both externally and internally. I hope to be able to share more news on the internal project soon. I think a lot of people are going to be excited about it. Stay tuned for more news on that when it is ready.
Syil hands-on machining class
For the first time, I will also be offering an on-site hands-on machining class where attendees will model and program parts using Fusion 360 before learning how to machine the parts and making them on the Syil X7. Many of you know that for several years I taught the hands-on machining class at NYC CNC. In fact, that is probably where I met many of you that are currently reading this post.
Last summer I had the opportunity to host a user that I had been working with online to improve his Fusion CNC programming skills. He wanted to know if I would be interested in hosting him on-site so he could take the programming skills he had been learning and take things to the next level by actually running the parts he programmed on the machine.
Looking to buy a machine but unsure?
This is a great way to find out if CNC machining is right for you without having to buy a machine to find out. Over the course of the training classes I taught in Ohio, many of the attendees were unsure if they were capable of modeling, toolpathing, setting up and running a CNC mill. This class is a great way to find out. (Spoiler alert: You are!)
Class info
The focus of the classes will be to provide high quality highly engaged training to a small group of users by limiting the classes to 3 attendees per training session. One of my absolute favorite parts of the hands on classes that I taught in Ohio was watching attendees progress from the first day to the final day. It wasn’t uncommon for students to be hesitant and little intimidated to press the green button for the first time. As more parts were run, the confidence increased while some healthy respect for the machine and the process remained. On the very first day of the training the attendees looked to the instructor almost every step of the way for verification. On the final day of the class, the attendees were practically on autopilot after repetition of the process and successfully run parts in hand.
Below is the class description. You can find the sign up page for the class here: Syil Hands-On Machining Class - $1,250.00 — Mechanical Advantage
This three-day class is designed to cover the fundamentals of CNC programming as well as the setup and operation of a CNC milling machine. Students will use Fusion 360 to design and toolpath parts before setting up and executing the programs on the machine.
Computers will be provided for the class. Attendees may also bring their personal laptops for use in the class. Attendees may use either the commercial (paid) or personal (free) license of Fusion 360. The commercial license of Fusion 360 is recommended. Autodesk provides free 30-day trial accounts that convert to a personal license at the conclusion of the trial period. You can sign up for a trial account here.
Classes will run from 8:30 am to 4:30 PM with a one-hour lunch. Lunch is provided as part of the class. Attendees may choose an alternative lunch plan at their own expense.

Experience Minnesota
The first round of classes will be hosted during the late spring and summer months. Minnesota summers are mild and warm with long hours of daylight leaving plenty of time after the classes to experience one of my favorite parts of the state: lakes country that is just a short drive away. One of my favorite parts of the classes held in Ohio was getting to become friends with the attendees with most nights going out for supper and learning things about the attendees beyond CAD and CAM. I intend for these classes to be the same.
Questions?
If you have questions about hotels, travel arrangements, or information about the class, please contact me by emailing info@mechanicaladvantage.com I hope to see you there. I think you are going to learn a lot, meeting new people, and have fun doing it.
